This program is not a paid internship program; however interns may be offered stipends directly from their assigned institution on a case-by-case basis at that institution’s discretion. The internships are full-time (40 hours per week). Participants may receive university credit for their participation, depending on their school’s credit policy.

Teach & Travel (in Turkey and Balkans)

A 3 to 4 week program designed to teach English as a second language to mostly elementary school students. You can earn up to $1200 ($300 per week) in that portion of the program in addition to all other benefits available. The Teach &Travel (T&T) program is an international project aiming to place participants in different countries all over the world, giving an excellent opportunity to gain valuable international work and cultural experience. The majority of teaching positions will be in Turkey while many other countries will be available like the Albania, Bosnia, Bulgaria, Kosovo, Macedonia. Teaching locations will be arranged by FEBA along with free accommodation.

Read & Lead

The two weeks program for selected participants including some workshops, seminars, reading sessions and NGO visits.

1.      Workshops and Seminars: Discuss the logic behind the NGOs, volunteerism – the meaning of volunteering, how to ensure sustainability, what are the incentives and barriers of service to others, as well as personal excellence.
2.   NGO Visits: The Lead & Read Program allows participants the opportunity to examine, through visits and seminars, practical examples of successful non-governmental organizations. They will be given the opportunity to better understand the process of starting and running an NGO as well as learn about the development and growth processes involved. The program includes visits to numerous NGOs in person, including their facilities, branches, and an opportunity to participate in some of their events.

Food and accommodation will be provided in the Read & Lead program. Participants will receive an NGO Leadership certificate upon successful completion of the program.

PROGRAM BENEFITS

Free Sightseeing Tour In Turkey:

FEBA offers a free sightseeing tour in Turkey for all Teach and Travel participants. This fully sponsored, $900 valued trip will include visits to historic sites and tourist attractions along with some civic organization visits. The sightseeing tour destinations and itinerary may differ according to the teaching and internship locations of the participants.

Transportation:

Participants are required to purchase their own tickets. After successful completion of the program, documented ticket costs will be reimbursed up to the cap limits (maximum reimbursement amount) defined by FEBA. Cap limits are defined on the basis of the location of departure airport. FEBA is not responsible for the reimbursement of the portion of airfare exceeding the cap limit defined below.

The cap (maximum possible reimbursement) limits are as follows:

  • Flights from Eastern Time Zone (EST): $1050 (US Dollars)
  • Flights from Central Time Zone (CST): $1150 (US Dollars)
  • Flights from Mountain and Pacific Time Zones (MST and PST): $1250 (US Dollars)

To give an example, if a participant purchases a ticket from NY for $937, upon successful completion of the program, the participant will be qualified for a $937 reimbursement. If the same participant purchases a ticket for $1117, due to the existing $1050 cap limit for EST zone locations, in the end of the program he will be qualified for a reimbursement of $1050.

Important Note: Do not buy your tickets without confirmation from FEBA before decisions.

Housing:

Accommodation will be provided by the educational institution. Housing Facilities are not “co-ed”. Alcohol and Smoking are prohibited. There is also a strict “no guest” policy. Facilities are either college dorms or student housings. In some exceptional cases different form of housing can be offered like host families or teacher suites. Participants are held responsible for upholding the existing rules of the housing facility which may differ from one dorm to another. Other expenses (including travel within the country, food, & miscellaneous) to be covered by individual. In some cases, breakfast and/or lunch will be covered by the educational institution (to be determined as per agreement between educational institution and applicant).

FEBA is responsible to make sure the basic housing conditions promised by FEBA are met in every teaching location which doesn’t include internet availability, private room or free meal. On the other hand, in some locations, participants may be offered these kinds of ‘extra’ services as a courtesy by their education institution. In those cases, FEBA will not be responsible to match the services offered as a courtesy by an education institution to other participants all around the world in different education institutions.

FEES AND COSTS OF THE PROGRAM

Administrative Fee:

Participants are required to pay the administrative cost of the program.

UPDATE ON ADMINISTRATIVE FEE AND SPECIAL AIRFARE DEALS RESERVED FOR YOU
Due to the logistic problems with the availability of a group ticket agreement covering all US regions, we will not be able to offer group ticket deals and group ticket administrative fee option. The only administrative fee option available now is the regular price of $500 (US Dollars).

On the other hand, FEBA made regional ticket deals for participants and they are still available for you. In regions where holding airfare deals were possible, FEBA reserved some ticket deals mostly available for direct flight options. These tickets with special prices are available through http://www.teachntravel.net/. Check it out to take the advantage of special direct flight prices reserved for you!

Important Change in Administrative Fee Terms: In previous years, the administrative fee was charged after the admission offer which also served as a commitment to participation. As a courtesy to our applicants, this year FEBA will delay the fee payment date. For 2014 applicants, the payment of administrative fee defined above is to be charged after the completion of the program in the form of a deduction from the ticket reimbursement credit.

Visa:

US passport holders will be required to pay a $20 (US Dollars) visa fee at the airport upon entry into Turkey. Visas are valid for a total of 90 days.

Food and Local Transportation

Participants are responsible for their food costs. Some institutions may offer meal in housing and/or teaching facilities as a courtesy.

Participants are responsible for all kinds of transportation costs pertaining local transportation and travel to/from airports in the US. Free airport pickup in Turkey will be arranged by FEBA only for the participants who arrive within the designated pickup dates in the program schedule.

TIPS ON CRITERIA OF ADMISSION

The tips below can give an idea on some, but not all of the criteria of admission to the program:

  • Number of people who mentioned your name in the “how did you heard about the program” section is one criterion for acceptance, as a metric of how much you shared the program with your friends. If someone suggested the program to you, best way to express your appreciation is to write his/her full name under that question. Also remind your friends to write your name in that section if they heard about the program from you.
  • As FEBA is a community organization, community involvement and leadership skills/experiences are important criteria for us.
