Testimonials from Last Year's Participants

Prior to landing in Istanbul, I seriously wondered how I was going to handle it seeing as I had been living in a very small town in Virginia for the past eleven years. What I found was that I had felt more at home there than I had felt in a very long time. I found that the friends I met through the programs would be ones that I hope to keep forever.

My second week in Turkey I went off to training and then to Ankara to teach at a Samanyolu Girl’s High School. There, I lived with five very intelligent, caring and strong women who made my stay in Ankara even better. Mornings were quiet, with tired “Good Mornings” and “I’m so tired’s”, looking for these shoes and that makeup brush. However, after dealing with some of the happiest and most upbeat students I had ever met, we were ready to go out and explore the city of Ankara. Usually, after exploring new places, we ended up at the same restaurant listening to a live band on the rooftop and enjoying each other’s company, but those are some of the best memories we have made. My students, fellow teachers and school officials are another aspect of my stay that made my days so enjoyable. I always felt at home and everyone made sure of it.  I connected with my students through afternoon programs like horseback riding and preparing for our graduation program. We had late night Volleyball tournaments against my roommate’s classes and amazing waffle parties. We concluded the summer program with a graduation ceremony in which the student’s surprised us with a henna ceremony and dancing. I know that I was there to teach them something, but I am happy to say that I have learned a lot from them as well.  One day on the bus to our afternoon horseback riding activity, my student covered the phone I was vigorously typing on and told me to look outside. Every day after that, I took the time to take in everything that is going on around me and store those beautiful pictures in my head.

I left Ankara with a heavy heart but I was excited to go back to Istanbul and start my internship with Today’s Zaman. This was a great experience and this internship offered me an opportunity to write about something I was passionate about and publish it! I acquired a new interest and passion for journalism. I met some very intelligent and dedicated people who I continue to look up to even after the internship.  After the work day I took time to see Istanbul and learn about the history that had built it into the fascinating and charming place it is today.

Istanbul truly is a captivating place that will make youwant to go back over and over again. I spent the Ramadan month in Istanbul and that was quite an experience.  During this month I was taken aback by the hospitality, love and unity that went on around me. During the fast it was quiet and everyone was focusing on their own journey through the day. Once the sun started going down the streets would fill with tables set for Iftar and people doing last minute preparations. Iftar was always filled with laughing, talking and connecting with people. My time in Turkey, especially in Istanbul, also gave me a chance to reconnect with my religion and spirituality. I have also been able to learn a lot more about my heritage and its connections to that of Turkey.

I have taken a lot away from participating in the Teach and Travel and Internship programs. I am grateful for the opportunity and I hope that many more will be able to gain the experience I have gained this summer. FEBA has a great mission in promoting the prosperity of Balkan Americans and I hope that they will continue to be successful in all of their future endeavors.
